19:02 | WinAmp 5.04

Sometimes the comments on a news article are more interesting than the article itself. Case in question, this string of comments on DevArt's WinAmp 5.04 article.

stickyrice: “i'm a little curious about the message in the credits: ‘Winamp 5: The Final Edition (for now). Dedicated to all our users’”

rpeterclark: “Basically none of the Winamp developers are left over at Nullsoft. One by one they left, recently it was just a guy named Chris who was left actively working on it, but the other day I heard he is leaving as well…”

Interesting, no? Now one should never trust rumours as these, but it does make one wonder. What does the future hold for the app that started it all? || craeonics | comments (9)

19:12 | Shell-Shocked #9

In the past twelve month, shell centering ezine Shell-Shocked has released three issues, while everyone's favourite bunnyzine released zilch.

What's wrong with this picture?

“Issue 9, 19th July 2004

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go sob in the corner.

And for the record, there's nothing wrong with the tray. It's an acquired taste. || craeonics | comments (34)

The trouble of not updating for a week and then trying to cap the smaller news items as well (which usually comes down to module releases for the various shells) is obvious. But damn, look at that deluge of BlackBox for Windows modules! || craeonics | comments

00:45 | SysMetrix 3.21 3.22

Skinnable sysmeter SysMetrix' dev Xymantix has recently put up a development section, where you can grab the latest works in progress, like this 3.21 build.

“SysMetrix 3.21 contains a ton of additions, updates, and fixes - click here for the complete list. There were also a lot of internal changes and optimizations, so if something doesn't work quite right please let me know.

One of the latest additions is tooltips. Here's an example:

The picture shows the customized translucent tooltip that details the TCP/IP traffic information. The tooltip shows up when you hover over an object, such as a gauge, slider, bargraph, etc. The delay and dsiplay are configurable, as are the font, color of the text and background, and transparency.”

Those are some damn slick balloons.

And in between the original post at WinCustomize and me stealing it, a 3.22 build was released, fixing some issues. || craeonics | comments (3)

00:24 | bbLean 1.13 beta 0

bbLean is a spin-off of the BlackBox for Windows shell, which itself is an attempt to mimic the BlackBox window manager on *nix systems. The grand idea behind it is that it's fast, light and minimal.

What makes bbLean different from parent bb4win, I can't recall, as I use neither. But in its own words, it:

  • “is an advanced experimental version of Blackbox for Windows

  • is fully compatible to 0.90 bb4win builts and plugins

  • comes with many features, which you will not yet find in the main line of bb4win”

And huddled away in the lower left corner of its site, I found this new beta. Okay, so I saw news about it on plugin developer kana's site and went on to investigate. From the readme:

“News and changes:

  • Custom Menus

  • Configurable desktop mouse clicks

  • New Snap function, snaps plugins to each other also

  • New workspace code

  • Added menu keys

  • Contains a plugin API to support BBMail/BBPower (qwilk)

  • Contains the "XP-LogonScreen-Terminator" (credits to all who found it :)”

The beta contains the .exe and two modules, but no config. So install this over an existing installation. || craeonics | comments

00:02 | geOShell 4.11.8 beta

geOShell dates back into the far and distant past. This shell is almost as old as LiteStep. When LiteStep tended to move in the direction of bloat, geO popped up with his allegedly ‘light’, though definitely minimalistic, shell.

To me though, it was never that light. Early builds used to suffer from horrendous delays in showing the menu and configuration had to be done through the registry (gasp! horror!).

Now I haven't ran it in years, but it's obvious that it would have never lasted that long if these quirks had remained, so I'm certain it's better and more easier to configure these days.

“A number of things have changed with this release:

  • some bug/behaviour fixes

  • improved menu skinning

  • moved settings to more logical place

  • Note: use -noauto when running this beta for the first time (unless you logoff) or the startup tasks will run again.

    Changes:

    • ! meester jones fixed the thin menu and loaded menu skins with bar skins

  • + eiko borrowed some code from LS to make Startup Programs work the way they should (no more -noauto)

  • ! implemented Nicolas Escuder's fix for the XP logon screen delay

  • - fixed a "fade this bar" bug

  • + Jaykul added a new separator bitmap for GeoSep

  • + Added separate "Use System Color" settings for bars and menu

  • + Made the "Use System Color" setting write the settings out to the registry to ease creating themes

  • = moved all menu-related settings from ShellUI into \geOShell\ShellUI\Menu Settings

  • = moved all bar-related settings from ShellUI into \geOShell\ShellUI\Bar Settings

  • = moved "DropAction" settings from ShellUI into \geOShell\Services\Bars\Dr”

  • If you're wondering what it looks like, you should take a look at these desktop screenshots. || craeonics | comments

    23:57 | Maxthon 1.0 beta, previously MyIE2

Okay, so originally I wanted to post the news about MyIE2's search for a new default skin and how you could help out. But time caught up with me again, and lo and behold: Maxthon 1.0, previously known as MyIE2, has already been released yesterday.

“The biggest update yet for MyIE2 has arrived. Version 1.0 has been released under a new name and with many new features. ‘Maxthon’ the new name of MyIE2, has the biggest ever list of updates including advanced popups management, improved Ad Hunter, Unicode support and many others.”

MyIE2 Maxthon is a free Internet Explorer wrapper. It gives you the browser engine in a different, enhanced, skinnable interface. Although a statement about the new name was posted, it does not give any insight into the reason of the change.

    Look ma, I got a scoop! || craeonics | comments (13)

    23:44 | CustomBar 1.0

Over the years there have been numerous taskbar/start menu replacements, annex shell enhancers. This means that new boy CustomBar's got some fierce competition.

“Today marks the release of version 1.0 of CustomBar. CustomBar provides a small, flexible, and open-ended bar that can sit on the top or bottom of your screen. You can have your bar display system stats, control Winamp, provide shortcuts and menus to commonly used programs and sites, and much more. The prefab and plugin systems allow users to create their own additions to CustomBar. The bar is completely skinnable.”

Through means of dark rituals, customize managed to dig up a more extensive description of this app (supposedly from the site, but I couldn't find it).

Shareware, $19.95, 30-day trial version, 1.62 meg download. Much of the site is still under construction, so I have yet to see a skin or plugin for it. || craeonics | comments (1)

    22:58 | summer skin contest #2

And then there's customize's ‘Simple Summer Suite Contest’, which, erm, isn't going too well, it seems and has thus been extended.

“We've decided to extend the contest by a couple of weeks to let more people get their submissions in for the contest.

So let's get those finished up so the judging can begin!”

Part of the problem may be that, contrary to what some may claim, there really aren't that many skinners around. And the number of them that have an interest in the ‘community’ is only a small subset of that.

Another point is that making suites is an even more daunting task. In this case, the requirements are a wall, a complete visual style, and WinAmp, RainLendar and RainMeter skins.

Not something you throw together in an afternoon.

So as pointed out by some in the comments to the news post, extending the contest date isn't going to help.

Doom and gloom. Does that mean we should all just forget about contests? Hell no. Just keep their proportions realistic. A complete suite is simply too much. || craeonics | comments

    22:35 | summer skin contest #1

Not exactly fresh news, but I've been busy, so give me a break.

Under the monniker ‘Sizzlin' Summer Skinning Contest’, Advanced PC is hosting a skinning contest, with prizes provided by StarDock.

“To enter this competition, you need to design and create a WindowBlinds skin for AdvancedPC. This can be based on the current forum skin, or completely unique (but it must relate to AdvancedPC somehow). Who knows, we might even base a new forum skin, from your skin! The best thing, is that you can enter as many times as you like! But you can´t win more than one prize, it just gives you a better chance at winning.

    Now… on to the prizes!

    • 1st place — One years subscription to ObjectDesktop.

    • 2nd place — A WindowBlinds license.

    • 3rd place — A IconPackager license.

To enter, join up at AdvancedPC.org, create your skin and email it to digital[@]advancedpc.org (without the [ ]) along with a name and a small description.

This competition will end on 28th August 2004.”

And ofcourse, there are some rules:

“AdvancedPC reserves the right to alter any rules of this competition. We also reserve the right to bring forward or postpone the deadline. All decisions are final. No entrant can win more than one prize. AdvancedPC and Stardock staff may not enter.

You cannot enter skins that have already been released. Any entries must be completely the entrant´s own work, and never released before. Also, skins may only be released at AdvancedPC.org until the contest is over.”

The sceptic within whispers in my ears that “this a mere scheme to get themselves some Advance PC branded skins cheap”. And the whisper continues: “and isn't it strange that one of the prizes is a WindowBlinds license, when it's WindowBlinds you're supposed to skin? Something you can only do if you have the full version, which means you have no need for a WindowBlinds license anymore”.

But I, faithfull supporter of all that is Skindom, ofcourse ignore such vile and sub-standard claims. || craeonics | comments (1)

19:39 | down and out at Macromedia

For the third day in a row, the forums at Macromedia.com are down. The site says “We're sorry, but our Web-based Forums are experiencing technical difficulties. We are working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible”.

This is not a good advertisement for Cold Fusion! MM users and fans can only wonder how one of the web's most prestigious names could suffer such a severe and extended black eye.. || kenray | comments (6)
